Caroline Patrick dropped by for a conversation about one of my absolute favorite topics—niche marketing. Caroline’s a seasoned consultant and non-executive director hailing all the way from Australia, bringing a wealth of experience in customer brand and marketing across diverse industries like banking, wealth management, insurance, retail, and government.

To explain why she thinks it’s crucial for businesses to identify their niche Caroline shared a personal story of working with specific niche markets like the police and emergency services, highlighting the power of understanding your audience to tailor messaging and develop products and services that truly resonate. There is a balancing act when it comes to picking a niche, especially for startups who fear limiting their potential client pool. Caroline reminded us that trying to cater to everyone ultimately serves no one. She shares a fantastic example of niche businesses—a knife shop and a medieval heraldry shop in her local German village—that have thrived for decades by catering to specific groups and becoming known for their expertise.

Speak Directly To Your Ideal Client

The more you know about your customers, the easier it is to speak their language.  When you do that, they are more likely to respond positively to you, your product, and your company.

Even if you have defined your ideal client that may be too broad a group to speak to all at once.  Personas define individual people who clearly represent a subset of your ideal customer group. This allows you focus your product designs and marketing messages for specific people instead of some anonymous group.
