How do you set milestones that actually mean something in your business?
For years, my business plan was basically a fancy spreadsheet. A nice place to park numbers and quietly hope they would whisper the answers back to me. Spoiler alert. They did not.
What finally clicked was this. A plan without milestones is like a road trip without those big green highway signs. You will move forward, sure. But you will also spend a lot of time wondering if you missed your exit three miles ago and pretending that was totally intentional.
The shift started when I forced myself to get honest and specific. Not wishful. Not vague. Measurable. In one of my early businesses, I stood up and confidently declared, “We’re going to grow.” That was the whole plan. Just… grow.
No one knew what that meant. Especially me. Was that five new clients? Fifty? More revenue? Less chaos? Without clarity, we did not charge ahead. We wandered.
Once I started treating goals like actual mile markers, things changed fast. I set targets I could count. I added timelines that made procrastination uncomfortable. I gave myself permission to celebrate progress instead of waiting for some perfect finish line.
Suddenly the plan felt less like homework and more like a map. Clear directions. A sense of progress. And yes, a few well earned rest stops.
Those milestones do real work. They shape your timeline, clarify who owns what, and give your budget something solid to stand on. They turn good intentions into forward motion.
So let me leave you with this. Are your milestones helping you move forward, or are they just sitting there looking impressive on paper?
