Why Should I buy From YOu?
Whenever I chat with a small business owner about their marketing I want to start with their brand position.
Not their logo. Not their font. Not the clever tagline their girlfriend’s cousin dreamed up over the weekend. I’m talking about the real guts of the business—the thing that makes them different, memorable, and uniquely qualified to win their customers’ trust (and their dollars).
Sure, the technical details matter. The bells and whistles of your product, the fancy features of your service—those are part of the story. But here’s the thing: they’re not the whole story. And honestly? They’re rarely the most compelling part.
What makes a brand is the magic behind the curtain. The intangible stuff. What should people feel when they interact with your brand? What do you want them to remember long after the transaction is over?
Sounds simple, right?
It’s not.
Most businesses talk about quality, hard work, great service, or cutting-edge tech. All good things! But here’s the cold splash of truth: your competitors are saying the exact same thing.
Think about it. When was the last time you heard a company proudly claim, “We offer lousy service, our prices are outrageous, and our products fall apart by Thursday”?
Exactly.
So while those basic benefits might help you stay in the game, they won’t help you win it. They’re table stakes. You need something more—something that plants a flag and says, “This is who we are, and this is why we’re worth your attention.”
And that’s where the hard work begins.
Many companies take a shortcut here. They try to mash together a few nice-sounding phrases and hope for the best. Let’s take a look at one of the usual suspects:
“Leading-edge technology solutions at affordable prices.”
Sounds impressive, right? Except… not really. It actually raises more questions than it answers. Like, “How are you keeping those prices so low?” or “What corners are you cutting?” or “Is this going to blow up in six months?”
Now, compare that with something a little more grounded:
“We research the best technology alternatives and recommend the one that’s right for your budget.”
Ahhh. Feels better already, doesn’t it? Still tech-savvy, still mindful of cost—but now it feels thoughtful. Real. Trustworthy.
If you’re going to combine two ideas in your positioning, you’ve got to pick a leader. One takes center stage, the other supports from the wings. If both try to lead? You end up in a tug-of-war, and your customer walks away confused.
Here’s another classic:
“High fashion. Low prices.”
Cue the eyebrow raise. Are we talking Nordstrom on a sale day? Or Walmart everyday? Those are very different shopping experiences. If you’re trying to appeal to both, you’re probably not appealing strongly to either.
Nordstrom customers? They love a good deal—but not if it means sacrificing style or quality. Walmart customers? They’re practical. They know what they’re buying, and they’re cool with it—as long as it fits the budget.
Neither is right or wrong. Both business models work. Really well, actually. But they work because each brand knows exactly who they are and who they serve.
So let me ask you: Do you?
Where do you fit in your market? What makes you you—and not a watered-down version of someone else?
Getting your brand position right isn’t about being everything to everyone. It’s about being the right thing to the right people. When you know that, the rest gets a whole lot easier.
And if you’re not quite sure yet? That’s okay. Pull up a chair—we’ll figure it out together.
