PART 4: How Much Should You Spend?

It’s a simple question:

What should your marketing budget be? But there is no simple answer. Even for two companies which are relatively the same size and in the same industry, the answer may be dramatically different.

There are several factors which affect how much you need to spend on marketing.

The value of a customer.  Typically, you should spend no more than one-third of the gross profit you earn on a sale to acquire a new customer. The longer the relationship, the more supplemental products, the move valuable a customer becomes.

The age of your company. If you have been in business for a long time and you have an established name in your community, you will be able to spend less than a new upstart.

The strength of your customer base. Companies with an established base of customers they have stayed in contact with have an economic advantage. They can focus on marketing engagement and retention rather than introducing their business to a host of new prospects. It is always less expensive to keep a customer than find a new one.

Your sales skills measured by your closing rate.  How often does a prospect become a client?  Your closing rate is one of the most powerful numbers in your marketing equation. The better you are at converting opportunities to sales, the the fewer prospects you will need.

The quality of your referral network. Do you have strategic partners who send prospects to you? Do your existing customers like you well enough to recommend you to a friend?

PART 5: Clarify Your Audience

Everyone is not your customer.

It is a hard thing to accept, but no matter how cool your product is, there are people out there who don’t want it. On the bright side, if you can focus on the audience that is interested in your business and craft your messages to resonate with them, they are much more likely to engage with your brand.

Selecting a niche and targeting your message on a specific segment will not prevent you from working with others. Targeting simply forces you to focus your resources and attention on the most profitable segment.

Seth Godin hit the nail on the head when he said:

The problem with “everyone” is that in order to reach everyone or teach everyone or sell to everyone, you need to so water down what you’ve got you end up with almost nothing

Podcast: Interview with Wayne Mullins of Full Circle Marketing
Many business owners think closing the sale is the end of customer journey.  Guest Wayne Mullins doesn’t agree.  He sees the act of attracting the customer as only half the process.  The other half should be focused on keeping the customer engaged so they become an evangelist for our product.

PART 7: Measure Results

Is your business on track? Do you know? If you are like most successful small business owners, you have a handle on your financial statements, gross sales, expenses, receivables, and accounts payable.

These important numbers provide a great snapshot of where you have been and where you are at any given time. While it is handy to be able to predict next month’s cash flow, these numbers only tell you part of the story. They can’t give you any insight into future sales.

So relying exclusively on your financials to drive your business is like trying to drive your car by looking in the rear view mirror. You can see exactly where you have been and how you got there, but you won’t have a clue about the road ahead.

To predict the future, you need to be paying attention to metrics which tell you prospects are moving through your sales funnel. You need to measure the pre-buying behavior.
