User-Generated Content

Grow Your Brand with Stories People Want to Share

User-generated content (UGC) is one of the easiest ways to make your marketing more powerful, authentic, and fun. Why? Because instead of you telling everyone how great your brand is, your happy customers do the talking for you. And let’s be honest—their voices are the ones people trust the most. From creative contests to heartfelt reviews, tapping into this treasure trove of content can do wonders for your brand’s credibility and reach. Here’s how it works and why it matters.

Start with a Clear Vision
Before you ask your audience to contribute, define your goals. Are you looking to build brand awareness, showcase product use, or create a sense of community? Knowing your “why” helps you guide your audience and curate content that fits with your brand values.

Example: If you’re a fitness brand, your goal might be to showcase real customer transformations using your products. That vision sets the tone for the type of user-generated content you’ll request.

Let Others Brag for You
User-generated content is the modern version of word-of-mouth marketing. Research shows that 85% of people trust peer reviews over expert opinions. So, when someone gushes about their amazing dinner on Yelp or posts a photo of themselves loving your product, it’s pure gold. You’re not just reaching their audience; you’re earning trust with every share.

Turn Criticism into Confidence
Negative reviews don’t have to be the end of the world. In fact, they’re a chance to shine. If you fix the problem and ask the customer to share their updated experience, you’re building trust. A review that says, “They didn’t get it right at first, but they went above and beyond to fix it” is way more powerful than a generic “Everything was perfect.” It’s about showing you’re human—and that you care.

Make Participation Easy and Fun
People are busy, so asking them to create content needs to feel rewarding, not like a chore.

  • Run Contests: Offer incentives for the best submissions. A catchy hashtag and clear instructions can go a long way in encouraging participation.
  • Highlight Your Audience: Let them know their contributions will be featured on your website, social media, or newsletter. Everyone loves a moment in the spotlight!
  • Provide Prompts**: Not everyone is a natural content creator. Simple prompts like “Show us how you use [product] in your daily routine” can spark creativity.

The request doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes, the simplest ideas get the best results. One of my favorites programs was a hotel that invited guests to jump on the bed, snap a pic, and enter it into a contest. This idea didn’t just create great content it sparked bit of  joy and a memorable experience along the way.  And the best part? This user-generated content campaign, didn’t require a big budget. Proof, that a little creativity goes a long way.

Keep It Real
You can spot a phony ad from a mile away, right? So can your customers. That’s why UGC works best when it’s authentic. A slightly blurry photo or a post with a typo feels real and relatable. It’s like catching up with an old friend versus listening to a polished sales pitch. The imperfections make it human, and that’s what people connect with.

Fuel Your Content Program with USG.
There are many places in  your content strategy where you can apply USG.

  • Social Media: Once you’ve got a few pieces of great UGC, highlight them prominently. When people see others participating, they’re more likely to join in..  Reuse the content Feature UGC as part of your posting schedule. It’s perfect for stories, carousels, or even Reels.
  • Website: Add customer photos or testimonials to product pages to build trust and improve your conversion rates.
  • Email Campaigns: Feature user-generated content in newsletters or promotional emails to make them feel more personal and engaging.
  • Paid Ads: Remember that people respond positively to authentic content, and UGC can give your ads a natural, relatable edge.

Build a Community—and Say Thanks
This program thrives when people feel seen and appreciated. Celebrate your top contributors with shoutouts or rewards. Even if you don’t use every response, a simple like or thank-you keeps them coming back. People share because they want to be part of something bigger, and a little gratitude goes a long way, helping you build a loyal community excited to co-create with you.

Mind the Legal Details
Before using UGC, ensure you have permission from the creator. A quick DM asking for usage rights or creating a formal submission process can save you from potential headaches.

User-Generated Success
The formula is simple: make it fun, make it easy, and always say thank you. Whether it’s a contest, a review request, or a heartfelt shoutout, inviting your audience to join the conversation can transform your marketing. And who knows? You might just discover your next great story comes from someone who already loves what you do.

Although this was recorded 10 years ago, the tactics outlined will work as well today as they did a decade ago. User-generated content is still a powerful marketing strategy.
