Time, Tools & Talent

Three “T”s to Turbo Charge Your Marketing Plan

As the year kicks off, it’s the perfect time to roll up your sleeves and map out your annual marketing plan. If you’re like many small business owners, you’re probably buzzing with ideas for new strategies and creative tactics to try. But here’s the thing: without a solid handle on the “Three Ts” — Time, Talent, and Tools — all those big ideas could end up gathering dust on the shelf.

Time: The Unsung Hero of Marketing Success

Marketing isn’t magic. Every blog post, social media update, email campaign, and landing page takes time to create. And let’s face it, time is one of the most precious commodities in your business. So how do you make sure you’ve budgeted enough of it to bring your marketing plan to life?

Start by breaking it down. Let’s say you want to write a blog post. Here’s how the time might add up:

  • Research (1 hour):** Even if you’re an expert, chances are you’ll need some supporting facts or data to back up your points.
  • Writing (1.5 hours):** A well-crafted blog post of 500+ words doesn’t write itself. With a good outline, you can knock it out in this time frame.
  • Editing and SEO (0.5 hours):** Polishing your draft, checking links, writing a compelling meta description, and optimizing for keywords all take effort.
  • Graphics (1 hour):** A strong visual can make or break your post on social media. Whether you’re curating a stock photo or creating a custom design, this step is key.
  • Social Media Scheduling (0.5 hours):** Sharing your content consistently on platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, or Facebook helps you get noticed.

Add it up, and a single blog post might take about 4.5 hours. Want to post one blog a month? That’s 50+ hours a year. One a week? You’re looking at a commitment of nearly half a workday every single week.

Repeat this exercise for all your planned marketing activities. It’s eye-opening and a bit like realizing how much time you actually spend scrolling Instagram when you were just going to check the weather.

Talent: Who’s on Your Marketing Dream Team?

Once you know how much time your marketing plan requires, it’s time to ask: Who’s going to make it happen?

If your plan is simple — say, a monthly blog post, occasional social media updates, and a quarterly newsletter — you might be able to handle it with your current team. But if you’re ready to step things up with more frequent posts, case studies, or email campaigns, you’ll need to take a hard look at your resources.  Ask yourself:

  • Do we have enough time? If marketing is just one of many hats your team members wear, some things might slip through the cracks.
  • Do we have the right skills? Writing, designing, and editing require different talents. Not everyone can do it all.

If the answer to either question is “no,” you’ve got two options: hire in-house or outsource.

Hiring: Bringing someone on board full-time is a big commitment. It’s like adopting a puppy — rewarding, but you’ll need to invest time and money in training and care. A great hire can be a game-changer, but finding one person who can write, design, and handle website updates isn’t always easy. Plus, don’t forget about benefits and overhead.

Outsourcing: Working with a marketing firm or freelancer lets you tap into a team’s expertise without the long-term commitment. Think of it like renting a vacation home instead of buying — flexible and often less expensive. But be prepared for a learning curve as they get to know your business, and expect to commit for at least six months to see results.

Tools: Your Marketing Toolbox

Finally, let’s talk tools. Just like you wouldn’t fix a leaky faucet without a wrench, you can’t execute a marketing plan without the right software and systems. From scheduling social media posts to analyzing website traffic, the right tools can save you time and headaches.

Start by reviewing what you already have. Are your current tools still pulling their weight? Just because you’ve used the same software for years doesn’t mean it’s the best fit now. If a tool feels more like a roadblock than a helper, it might be time to upgrade.

Once you’ve weeded out the outdated or clunky options, consider adding a few new ones to the mix. Whether it’s a better graphic design app or an email automation platform, the right tools can help you do more with less effort.

Pulling It All Together

A successful marketing plan isn’t just about ideas — it’s about execution. By taking the time to budget your hours, assess your team, and equip yourself with the right tools, you’ll set yourself up for a year of marketing wins. And who knows? You might even have a little time left over to celebrate your successes along the way. Cheers to that!
